This year, the G7 summit is being held in Carbis Bay, Cornwall. What is expected to be discussed?

Between the 11-13th June 2021, the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be meeting leaders from Germany, France, Italy, Japan, United States and Canada to support the progression of health, wealth and environmental protection as we move into the future.

What is G7?

G7, originally known as ‘G8’ (when Russia was involved), is an international coalition of leading nations which aim to cooperate and respond to global challenges.

Decisions made at G7 meetings are not legally binding however, they can positively influence political decisions and have so far supported global health issues such as malaria and Aids as well as supporting global economies.

More recently, the coalition has discussed matters such as climate change in line with the Paris Agreement.

The 2021 Summit

This year will definitely be a unique year since focus will be upon global health and global economies in relation to the Coronavirus pandemic. Boris Johnson has hit out with the statement that this summit will centralise around the focal point of “Building Back Better”. This means building back economies, building back health and building back the environment. Sounds promising right?

Current news suggests that the summit will discuss:

  • Building resilience against future global pandemics
  • Promoting free and fair trade
  • Climate change and protecting global biodiversity

Global Environmental and Ecological Health

The following reference to environmental/ecological health is stated on the G7 webpage:

“As the world recovers from the pandemic, we also face a tipping point for our climate and natural environment. We will protect the future of our planet by moving towards net-zero and providing financial support for developing countries to do the same. By protecting 30% of our land and of our ocean by 2030 we will look after our natural environment for future generations”.

What ‘Net-Zero’ may involve?

Now the following is speculation made using an educated guess, however we can hope that the following points will be discussed:

  • How to transition from non-renewable to renewable technologies
  • How to improve transport infrastructure – making more emission free zones in cities and improving access to low emission vehicles and public transportation.
  • Improving existing building infrastructure – this could include plans to reduce heat and energy loss from buildings.
