Greenwashing: a marketing ploy which deceives customers into believing that a company’s procedures/goods are ‘eco-friendly’. Who is guilty and who is to trust?

Greenwashing is increasingly common in marketing and advertising as the UK advocates sustainability.

As a blogger for a renewable energy business, it can sometimes be difficult to ensure a balance is made between promoting the real and true benefits of renewables, whilst educating the customers about the environmental impacts of the technologies. Before you think I am suggesting they are worse than non-renewable sources of energy, they’re not – but nothing is 100% perfect!

The true issues lie when big organisations claim to be ‘green’ or claim to be involving themselves in ‘green’ activities when they’re not. This leads to customers buying a product that is falsely advertised!

Greenwashing Tariffs

We may have seen the tariffs many companies are selling by now – I am talking about the ‘green’/renewable energy tariffs.

In fact, Rob Gross, the director of the Energy Research Centre in the UK said that: “the sale of green tariffs has remarkably increased since 2015. In fact, it has doubled between 2017 and 2018,”.

This is great news to see companies moving towards a lower carbon future, although for some companies, all is not what it seems!

Many brands are selling their green tariffs whilst providing their customers with non-renewable energy from methods such as oil, coal and natural gas then ‘offsetting’ the emissions to provide their tariff!

A great way to avoid energy tariff lies and variable rates is to power your home with micro-generation solar energy.  A 10 panel 310W array can provide up to 3,100kWh of electricity which is enough to provide your electricity needs.

By turning to renewables, you reduce your reliance upon the grid and can avoid the hassle of energy tariffs. Solar PV systems are a great way to get on board with the green revolution and with a Tesla Powerwall which stores your solar energy, you could supply all your own energy needs (depending upon your household energy usage).
