It is a subtle difference, but for those interested in purchasing solar PV you should ask yourself the question: do I want integrated panels or on-roof solar panels?
Despite their value to the renewable energy industry, solar systems have faced past contentions since people believed the panels were ugly.
However, solar companies have redesigned their modules to become stylish and fashionable…so we can happily wave goodbye to the outdated designs.
Whilst companies still offer the classic blue panel, clients are now offered a black-based alternative. It is a tiny change but it makes all the difference!
In addition, some companies such as ‘Maxeon’ offer all-black modules which eradicate the ‘lined’ appearance of past visions of solar and in my opinion look incredibly smart.
Alongside the design changes, PV providers also offer clients the opportunity to build in-roof or on-roof systems. Yet again the difference is subtle but it can completely change the aesthetics of a building.
In-Roof Solar PV
In-roof systems (otherwise known as integrated solar) are a great option if you are currently renovating your home and am yet to finish the roof. These systems seamlessly host the panels with the roof built around the PV modules. Depending on the choice of in-roof system, the solar panels sit within a specially designed mounting system that is installed on top of felt and battens. So, any new roofs should always add in-roof solar as over time the roof will pay for itself.
In-roof systems can also be easily fitted for those whose roof is already solidly built.
In these instances, we would carefully remove the necessary slates or tiles and fit the modules to the roof. If we are required to remove the tiles, this may come with a slight additional cost due to the extra time required to complete the job.
If you are having Velux windows (other brands available) the in-roof systems do have an integration that fits seamlessly into the Velux, and this offers an amazing finish as seen to the left.
Will my roof leak water with an in-roof system?
No,no, and no!
Do not worry, in-roof solar systems will not impact your homes ability to keep the rain out. The systems we use have over 4,000,000 m2 of solar throughout Europe and are MCS approved (tough to get). The flashings work in a similar way to Velux windows and are very well tried and tested.
On-Roof Solar PV
I am sure that you have probably already gathered what on-roof PV is through the process of elimination.
On-roof systems are fitted onto a bracket and rail system on the roof. With these fittings, the modules sit raised on the roof which means that precipitation can run down behind them. They have a lot of pros too, so sometimes it just comes down to preference and what is possible given the amount and orientation of your roof.
Here at Wessex ECOEnergy we always recommend going with an in-roof system if possible as we think it offers the best aesthetic. But, our team can help you decide what best fits your situation, we will explain the full reasons and help you decide what is best. If we can help please fill in this form.
