MyEnergi: the successful UK business which began in a living room in North Lincolnshire.

About the Company

MyEnergi was co-founded by Jordan Brompton and Lee Sutton and presented new revolutionary technology to the electric vehicle (EV) car charging industry. In 2017, the company released the world’s first EV charger which could run off solar energy. This was a game changing moment in the EV movement as it meant cars could run on ‘clean’ energy from micro-generation home systems.

By 2020, the Myenergi hired over 100 members of staff and had to expand the business over two sites in Lincolnshire.  Furthermore, the company set up their second HQ in Maastricht in the Netherlands (their first HQ was developed in Germany).

All About the Zappi EV Charger

In 2017, the Zappi was released onto the market. This charger enabled homeowners to power their EV’s with their own solar energy – which improves the return on investment (ROI) for both the solar panels and electric car.  The product was highly commended since in 2018, it was the winner of the Humber Renewables Award 2018 – Green Innovations Award.

For those who do not own solar, the Zappi does run off grid electricity and at Wessex ECOEnergy we recommend buying this charge point since it supports the ‘future proofing’ of your property – i.e. if you later decide to buy solar PV, you can use Zappi’s ‘eco’ option.

Zappi: The Three Charging Modes

  • Eco – In this mode the EV is charged by a mixture of both renewable and grid energy. The charging power is continuous with the percentage of renewable/grid energy adjusting in relation to renewable energy generation and availability.
  • Eco+ – In this mode, the charge continually fluctuates in response to renewable energy generation and its usage in your property.
  • Fast – In this mode, the EV charges as quickly as possible using whatever energy is available. For those without Solar PV or wind turbines, this would be 100% grid electricity.

What Features Does the Zappi Have?

  • Boost function which keeps battery at minimum charge level
  • Integral residual-current device (RCD) – this circuit breaker prevents you from harm
  • Adjustable charge current limit
  • 5 metre cable for Type 1 or 2 charge plugs
  • Economy tariff sensing which can help maximise savings
  • 3-year warranty
  • OLEV approved – may be entitled to the £350 grant

The RRP of the Zappi is £695 plus installation costs.

Zappi Charge Point Sizes

Zappi offers a 7.4kW and 22kW charge point – both of which are considered as ‘fast chargers’ – with the 22kW option being the largest available for domestic properties.

(The kilowatt (kW) refers to the maximum amount of power that can be drawn from the socket at a given time).

Simplistically, the bigger the kW charge point, the quicker the charging.

So, if you are wanting to charge your car as fast as possible at home, you may be interested in the 22kW option..  Although, you need to be aware that to install this, your property needs to be three phase and your car must accept 22kW.
