The Pavilion in the Park (PiP), located in Poundbury fields, Dorchester, is set to open on April 16th 2021.

About PiP

The PiP hosts a cafe, community space, offices, public toilets and most importantly, the ‘Alcohol Education Trust’, which will run the building.

Over the past two years, the trust has raised funds to build a publicly accessible and welcoming space for the local community since the trust was previously operating from a garden garage!

The Pavilion is an incredibly smart-looking building which, in line with the Dorset Council Climate and Ecological Emergency, is built with sustainability in mind. Not only has the building been constructed using recycled, reused and reclaimed materials, but it also hosts a 16-panel solar array installed by our team at Wessex Eco Energy.

The Pavilion has been made possible with the support of The Duchy of Cornwall and Low Carbon Dorset, who provided financial support for the development of green energy solutions.

The Alcohol Education Trust is a Dorset charity that works nationally to ensure that 11- 25-year-olds make safer choices regarding alcohol consumption. Through early intervention and harm minimisation, the charity helps young people to make informed responsible life choices through the school and youth organisations and parents/carers, it supports free of charge with award-winning resources, workshops and training that build young people’s resilience and life skills.

The Solar Array

The PiP hosts 16 x in-roof ‘SunPower’ 325W (watt) solar panels which provide up to 5,200kWp (kilo-watt power). SunPower provides some of the most efficient panels on the market  and are used by the likes of NASA and Google.

The panels are predicted to save around 4 tons of CO2 per year. This is equivalent to driving approximately 9,000 miles in a diesel powered vehicle.

Furthermore, with the installation of a Tesla Powerwall, the Pavilion is able to store solar energy for use during periods of low sunlight (evenings and nights) and during power outages.

Our Director of Wessex ECOEnergy, Daniel Cole, stated:

“The Pavilion’s SunPower solar panels, which are very low profile, are market leading in performance and will work hard to supply PiP with green energy for most of the year. Any spare solar energy is stored by the Tesla Powerwall battery, which will provide energy security during power outages. The Powerwall can store enough energy to boil a kettle for around 6 hours continuously or a low energy light bulb for 2,700 hours”.

Low Carbon Dorsets’ Programme Manager, Heather Kiel, stated:

“We are thrilled to support this project, this is a great example of an organisation taking action to support a greener future here in Dorset. By building their new site off the gas grid, the Alcohol Education Trust shows a real commitment to minimising their carbon footprint. And their new solar panels and battery storage will mean they can make the very most of the electricity they generate from their solar panels.”
